Obtaining and Installing VMware Player

At the time of this article's writing, VMware Player was in version 1.03. VMware runs on both the Microsoft Windows and Linux platforms. You can download VMware Player from http://www.vmware.com/download/player/.

Installing VMware Player is rather straightforward in Windows. Simply download the 28MB installer and run the executable.

As alluded to earlier, the VMware Player must run VM images (also referred to as virtual appliances). VMware offers a Browser Appliance for download at http://www.vmware.com/vmtn/appliances/directory/browserapp.html. This browser appliance runs on Ubuntu Linux Version 5.10. The appliance download is 258MB, which means that you should consider putting the appliance VM image on a USB stick so you can take your browser appliance with you.
