Steps for Success

  1. Customize the Web design use case diagram for you situation, especially in the areas of Create Content and Create Stylesheet. You may also wish to specialize the use case for Design Content Templates based on your selected portal platform. Add or remove actors as appropriate to your organizational structure. For example, you may wish to add a Graphic Designer as a new stakeholder and expand on the use cases for interface design.

  2. Write a description for each use case in the diagram that explains how its goal will be achieved for your portal platform and content types.

  3. Apply these use cases as requirement guidelines and evaluation criteria when selecting a portal platform for your business.

  4. Emphasize flexibility in your choice of a portal platform. Future applications will likely require convergence of wired and wireless connectivity—PCs, mobile, and interactive television devices—and ever-expanding sources of information.

  5. Choose your content vocabularies carefully and look for common vocabularies shared by your business partners. If necessary, select authoring tools that support the chosen vocabulary.
