Edit and Share Movies Using The Newly Revamped iMovie App for iPad

With the iPad, you can shoot dazzling digital photos, and then edit and share them using the Photos or optional iPhoto app, for example. However, if you want to tap your inner Steven Spielberg and produce incredibly impressive home videos using your iPad, you’ll want to use the latest version of Apple’s iMovie app. In this article, best-selling author and avid iPhone/iPad user Jason R. Rich offers a preview of what the most recent edition of the iMovie app for the iPad (and the iPhone) is capable of.

Thanks to iMovie, which is part of the iLife suite of software that comes bundled with all Macs, ordinary people are able to edit their home movies using impressive tools in order to add music, animated transitions, titles, and other special effects to their productions, before sharing them. Over the years, Apple has improved upon its iMovie software, making cutting-edge video editing tools available to the average Mac user.

When Apple released iOS 5, it also released an iPad version of iMovie, which made some of the video editing tools offered by the Mac version of iMovie available to tablet users. Thus, using the iPad, it became possible to shoot video using the iPad’s built-in camera and the Camera app, and then edit and share it directly on the iPad. This is also possible on the iPhone, but with its smaller screen, editing video while on the go is a bit trickier.

About a year after the original iMovie app was released, in conjunction with the launch of the new iPad and iOS 5.1, Apple dramatically improved the iMovie app. This most recent version is not only a bit easier to use, but it also features more popular video editing tools adapted from the Mac version of the software, many of which were inspired by professional-quality video editing tools currently used in Hollywood.

With a bit of practice, your vacation videos, movies of your kids, or footage of family gatherings, for example[md]which are shot in high-definition using your iOS device’s built-in cameras or any camcorder[md]can be combined with music, sound effects, animated titles, slick transitions, digital photos, and eye-popping special effects. The end result will be home videos with a true Hollywood flair that are fun and visually entertaining to watch.

What’s New in the Latest Version of the iMovie App

One of the popular features added to the latest version of the iMovie app is the ability to create Hollywood-quality movie trailers using templates. The app comes with nine different themed templates that feature flashy graphics and original music. Each template allows you to drag and drop your video footage and content into it, in order to produce a movie trailer-style production in just minutes[md]complete with animated credits.

As you begin editing your video footage, you can also add visual pizazz to your productions with the new selection of professionally designed themes, which have also been incorporated into the app. There are eight separate themes to choose from, and each includes its own set of titles, transitions, and soundtracks. However, you can also mix and match theme elements to give each of your movies a truly unique look and sound.

iMovie makes editing video footage a fun project. However, you can also use it to animate digital photos that are stored on your iPad or iPhone. Photos can be seamlessly embedded into your videos, or you can create stunning animated slide shows with the iMovie app.

Because sound plays an important role in movies, in addition to offering tools for isolating and enhancing the audio that was recorded in conjunction with your raw video footage as it was being shot, iMovie makes it easy to add voice-overs or narration after the fact to your video projects.

Plus, with a few taps on the screen, you can overlay one of many original music soundtracks that were commissioned by Apple for the iMovie app. Each was created by one of Hollywood’s top composers. However, if none of the soundtrack music that comes with the app is suitable, you can always import any music from your iTunes library, or compose your own music using the Garage Band app ($4.99), and then add it to your movie. The iMovie app also comes with a library of more than 60 sound effects that can be dropped into your movies to help add comic relief or suspense, or grab the viewer’s attention.

Using your iPad’s Camera app, shooting video footage in almost any situation is as easy as pointing your phone or tablet at the action you want to film, and then tapping the Record icon. Then, using the iMovie app, you can take that raw video footage and transform it into a short story.

As you’re shooting video using your iPhone or iPad, you can dramatically improve the sound quality by using an optional microphone, instead of the one built in to your iOS device. Several companies, including Mic-W, offer professional quality microphones that can connect to the iPhone or iPad.

Also, keep in mind, working with shorter movies on either the iPhone or iPad is much more practical than trying to create a production that’s longer than 10 minutes or so.
