With more than 500 million active users, Facebook is a great place to promote your business. It's important to remember, though, that just creating a Facebook page for your business isn't enough to attract thousands of raving fans. You need to develop a community, offering the type of content that makes people want to come back for more. In this article, I'll show you seven great ways to get more people to likeand participate onyour Facebook page.
1. Create Content that Attracts Your Target Audience
One of the most effective ways to get more people to like your Facebook page is to create content that informs, entertains, and engages your target audience. Unfortunately, this is a step that many Facebook page owners skip in their rush to attract fans. Before you do any Facebook page promotion, ensure that your page is one that people want to like.
To start, post relevant, informative content on a regular basis. You can post status updates, questions, links, photos, or videos, so mix things up a bit to make it more interesting.
Figure 1 shows an example of posting a link to a Facebook page.

If you also want to drive traffic to your own website, consider adding links to your blog posts on your Facebook page. Recent studies indicate that manually publishing your blog posts to Facebook generates higher impressions than using an automated tool. If you're pressed for time, however, some tools to consider include dlvr.it (http://dlvr.it), Ping.fm (http://ping.fm), or HootSuite (http://www.hootsuite.com). Facebook apps such as RSS Graffiti and Networked Blogs perform a similar function.
Encouraging visitor participation also helps promote your page. When someone likes or comments on an existing post, for example, they share this information with their friends. You can establish posting permissions on your page's Manage Permissions tab (see Figure 2). Choices include allowing fans to write or post content on your Wall, add photos, or add videos. Remember that if a fan does post something inappropriate, you can easily delete it.

When you publish content on your Facebook page, be careful to avoid too much of a good thing. If you post multiple updates daily, you could drive people away and make them unlike your page. Being overly promotional can also drive away fans. Striving to consistently deliver quality over quantity is the best way to retain and grow your fan base.
