Case Study 1

  1. As discussed in this chapter, today's typical PC can have many different input and output devices. From keyboards, mice, writing tablets, and game pads, to monitors, printers, and speakers, the computer would be unusable without these I/O devices.

Examine your home (or lab) computer, and identify the different input and output devices. List each one, and identify the type of device and its characteristics.

For example, your PC will most likely have a monitor. List the manufacturer name, model, size, maximum resolution, and so forth. Create a detailed list of the input/output devices that you possess.

Case Study 2

  1. Today's PCs have many different connections. In order to input information and have corresponding information outputted by the computer, all of the devices need to be connected to the correct ports.

Examine your home (or lab) computer and identify the various ports associated with it. Make a quick sketch of the back of the computer. Document each port, what they look like, their orientation, and any identifiable characteristics.

For example, a standard serial port is often blue or black with nine pins (one row of five and a row below with four). That particular port is known as a DB-9 port (or DE-9) port and transmits at five volts.
