Microsoft did a huge amount of work around multimedia in PowerPoint 2010. As a result, we can now do all kinds of things with video on our slides: trim time from the beginning and end of the video, crop them, recolor them, add bevels and reflections to them, and rotate them, just to name a few.
In addition, video – audio, too, for that matter – is now embedded in the PowerPoint file. This is a great bonus for users! No more broken links, no more missing media. Just send the PowerPoint file, and the video is included inside it.
As cool as all of these new video features are, Trigger to Bookmark is my favorite. Trigger to Bookmark allows us to synchronize animations with media, which gives us the ability to add captions and create callouts for our video files.
So let’s take a look at how to caption a video. Really, it’s just a matter of performing the following steps:
- Insert the video
- Add bookmarks to the video
- Animate the captions
- Marry the animations to the bookmarks

Insert the video
Inserting a video is easy. Go to the Insert tab on the Ribbon, click the bottom half of the Video button, and choose Video From File. Navigate to the video, select it, and click the Insert button.
The video will be inserted onto the middle of your slide. By default, it will play when you click it (or you can use the new movie controls that appear when your mouse moves over the video in Slide Show View to begin playback). If you want the video to play automatically when you advance to that slide, on the Video Tools Playback tab of the Ribbon, change the Start option from On Click to Automatically.
