LAN Technologies

Chapter Prerequisite

Have a basic knowledge of the essential differences between the various cabling standards and specifications. You should be familiar with 10BaseT, 10Base2 (thinnet), 10Base5 (thicknet), and FDDI LAN architectures. You also should be familiar with the OSI model, which is discussed in Chapter 2.

While You Read

  1. What are the differences between the channel access methods of Ethernet and of Token-Ring?

  2. Identify the following specifications: 802.2, 802.3, and 802.5.

  3. What are the differences between half-duplex and full-duplex?

  4. What are the similarities and differences between 10BaseX and 100BaseX?

  5. What are the distance limitations with 10Base2, 10Base5, and 10BaseT?

Before You Start

The previous chapter laid the foundation for an explanation of current networking standards and the models that preceded and guide them. This chapter addresses the application of those standards in detail.

The term application means the literal use of the standards in the form of network architecture and specifications for the major topologies. Those standards include IEEE and ANSI specifications for Ethernet, Fast Ethernet, Gigabit Ethernet, Token-Ring, and FDDI. They also include their frame types and channel access methods. In addition, this chapter discusses cable types and their specifications, such as distance limitations and transfer speeds.
