Your BlackBerry 7100 series device is by many accounts a powerful computer that can be used entirely on its own to carry out a lot of interesting and useful tasks. However, to truly get the most out of your device you must occasionally connect the device to your desktop PC. This is important because your desktop PC is probably already your center for storing and retrieving contacts and email messages and carrying out other personal information management. Not only that, your desktop PC is your device's window into a much larger world of BlackBerry applications. In other words, you can use your desktop PC to install new applications to your device. Your desktop PC can also serve as an excellent backup system for your BlackBerry device. Speaking of desktop PCs, the standard BlackBerry desktop software supports only Windows computers, but third-party applications are available that allow you to interface with your BlackBerry device using a Macintosh computer.
Your BlackBerry shipped with a CD-ROM containing the BlackBerry Desktop Software, which includes the BlackBerry Desktop Manager. This application runs on your desktop PC and provides several features for communicating between your device and your PC. Through this software you can synchronize PIM data, install and remove applications, and back up and restore device data.
8 Install the BlackBerry Desktop Software
The BlackBerry Desktop Software is included on the CD-ROM that shipped with your BlackBerry device and is also available online directly from Research In Motion (RIM) on the Web at https://www.blackberry.com/Downloads/—be sure you enter the URL exactly as shown with the s in https. You can either install the software straight from the CD-ROM or check for a newer version online. Either way, the purpose of installing the software is to gain access to the BlackBerry Desktop Manager, which is the PC application that allows you to communicate with your device. After the BlackBerry Desktop Manager is installed, you can begin interacting with your device from your desktop PC, including synchronizing PIM data, installing new applications, and performing backups.
- Insert the BlackBerry Desktop Software CD-ROM
Insert the BlackBerry Desktop Software CD-ROM into your desktop PC. The first step of the installation wizard appears, which prompts you to click Next with the mouse to continue with the installation. After you click Next to get started with the installation, the Country or Region Selection window appears.
- Select Your Country or Region
Click the drop-down list and select your country or region by clicking it. Then click Next to continue with the installation, which shows the License Agreement window.
- Accept the License Agreement
Click Yes to accept the license agreement. The Customer Information window appears.
- Enter Your Customer Information
Enter your User Name, which is typically your first and last name, followed by your Company Name. Click Next to continue with the installation, which shows the Email Integration Options window.
- Choose the Appropriate Email Integration Option
Click one of the two radio buttons to select the email integration option for the BlackBerry Desktop Software. If you want to access a corporate email account with your BlackBerry, choose the first option. If you only want to access a personal email account with your BlackBerry, choose the second option. If you plan on accessing both corporate and personal email accounts, choose the first option.
The remainder of the installation varies depending on which email integration option you select. If you select the first option, you're prompted to select the email system used in your corporate environment, such as Microsoft Exchange (Microsoft Outlook client) or Lotus Domino (Lotus Notes client). Select the email system and click Next. You're then prompted to select whether you'd like your corporate email to be redirected to your BlackBerry device via the BlackBerry Enterprise Server or the BlackBerry Desktop Redirector. If your company uses the BlackBerry Enterprise Server, select the Redirect email using the BlackBerry Enterprise Server option. Otherwise, select Redirect email using the BlackBerry Desktop Redirector as the Email Redirection option. Click Next to continue with the installation.
- Finish the Installation
The remainder of the installation for the BlackBerry Desktop Software follows the familiar flow of installing any Windows application. Just continue to click Next to accept the default installation settings, and the software will be successfully installed.
