To properly implement Windows SharePoint Services or SharePoint Portal Server 2003 it helps to understand how other organizations are using the products. This chapter provided an overview of different types of installations, both Windows SharePoint Services and SharePoint Portal Server 2003, and where the different databases make sense. The chapter offered insight on how server farms might be used and illustrated some sample configurations.

Some standard uses for Windows SharePoint Services site collections and SharePoint Portal Server 2003 portal environments were given, and information was provided on the ever-growing number of products that integrate with the SharePoint 2003 products, both from Microsoft and other third-party software companies.
