Using Your Own Styles
Most people use the built-in Heading 1 through 9 styles for outlining, but you do not have to. You can assign an outline level, 1 through 9, to any paragraph style that you create. To do so, you assign an Outline level to the style. Paragraphs with that style will then be placed at the corresponding level in Outline view. To assign an outline level to a style, display the Paragraph formatting dialog box and click the Indents and Spacing tab; then select the desired level, Level 1 through Level 9, from the Outline Level list. You can also select Body Text.
