Changing Google Settings and Use Android Device Manager on the Galaxy Tab 4

If you use a number of Google services on your Samsung Galaxy Tab 4, the device contains the pre-installed Google Settings app, so you can change all your Google settings within that one app. Eric Butow, author of My Samsung Galaxy Tab 4, shows you how to log in to all Google apps with one Google+ account.

Because the Android operating system is a Google product, it should come as no surprise that Samsung pre-installed a number of Google-specific apps and services on the Galaxy Tab 4. Those apps include Maps, Play Store, YouTube, Gmail, and Google+, and services include Google Search as well as Google Now. Samsung also pre-installed the Google Settings app, so you can change common settings across all apps such as your location settings, but also specific settings if you want to receive interest-based ads within apps.

What’s more, in the Google Settings app, you can change settings for the Android Device Manager (ADM) so you can remotely locate, lock, and erase your Tab 4 if you think (or know) you’ve lost the device. ADM is a free app that you can download from the Google Play Store, and this article not only shows you how to download and use ADM but also to change ADM settings in the Google Settings app.

Change Google Settings

Access the Google Settings app by tapping the Apps icon at the lower-right corner of the Home screen. Next, swipe to the second page of the Apps screen, and then tap Google Settings, as shown in Figure 1.

Figure 1. The Google Settings app icon is a gray cog and is located in the middle of the screen.

The Google Settings screen that appears in Figure 2 contains a list of nine different setting categories, from top to bottom:

  • Connected Apps: Shows apps that have access to one or more resources on your Tab 4, such as a website that has access to your email address.
  • Play Games: Tell the Google Play Games app how to notify other Play Games users of your intentions, such as if you want a game to send gifts and requests to other players.
  • Location: Opens the Locations list in the Settings screen, so you can change your location settings and specify your location addresses such as your home and work address.
  • Google Fit: If you like to track your fitness on your Tab 4, you can do so by downloading and installing the free Google Fit app from the Google Play Store. Then you can connect Google Fit on your Tab 4 to other apps and devices such as a smartphone. On the Google Fit settings page, you can view all apps and devices to which Google Fit is connected, view those app/device settings, and disconnect the app/device from Google Fit.
  • Search & Now: Change Google search settings such as the language you search in as well as how Google Now presents updates and how it notifies you of updates. For example, you can change the ringtone used when Google Now has one or more urgent updates for you.
  • Ads: You can tell the Tab 4 to opt out of interest-based ads within Google apps. You can also view more information about Google Ads such as what you may see in ads.
  • Security: In this screen you can turn security settings on and off such as scanning your device for security threats. You can also set Android Device Manager settings in this screen, and you learn more about using Android Device Manager and changing its settings later in this article.
  • Drive-Enabled Apps: If you connect your Tab 4 to the Internet through a data connection from a mobile provider (such as a 4G LTE connection), you can change the settings on this screen to either update files over Wi-Fi only or update files with your data connection. Note that if you use your data connection you will use up your monthly data quota more quickly.
  • Account History: You can change who sees your history and what kind of account activity the Tab 4 tracks, such as what you do on the web. When the Tab 4 tracks and logs your history, the Tab 4 learns from that activity and delivers information you need quickly.

After you tap a setting, you may see more options on the Google Settings screen for that particular setting. You can access these settings by tapping the Menu icon at the right side of the menu bar that appears at the top of the screen.

For example, in the Connected Apps settings screen, tap the Menu icon on the menu bar. Then you can tap Activity Log to see your latest activities on your Google account or get help for Connected Apps settings (see Figure 3).
