Exploring Google Currents
If you visit a lot of news sites or blogs on your smartphone or tablet, you need a news aggregator. This is an app that assembles the top stories and postings from your favorite sites and blogs and displays them all on a single page for your reading convenience.
Some of the most popular news aggregator apps to date include Flipboard and Pulse. But there’s a new competitor in the aggregator market that’s worth checking out – Google Currents, from the same folks who revolutionized web search.
What is Google Currents?
Google Currents is an app for your smartphone or tablet that assembles the top news and posts from your favorite news sites and blogs. It presents each source in a magazine-like design. Tap a headline to read the full story, with special onscreen formatting.
Using a news aggregator like Currents is faster and easier than reading the same content in your device’s web browser. There are no ads to load; Currents adapts screen text automatically to different-sized tablets and smartphones. You can even subscribe to your favorite sources for offline viewing – and identify “trends” to follow with new articles from multiple sources. Currents synchronizes all your subscriptions across multiple devices.
Google has arrangements with more than 150 publishing partners to offer content from more than 180 different sources – what Currents calls editions. You can find content from ABC News, The Atlantic, Bleacher Report NFL, Boing Boing, CBS Sports, CNET, The Daily Beast, Engadget, Entrepreneur, Fast Company, Forbes, Gawker, Gizmodo, The Guardian, Guitar World, The Huffington Post, Law.com, Mashable, The Motley Fool, Moviefone, The New Republic, Parenting.com, PBS, Popular Science, RedState, Salon, Saveur Magazine, SlashGear, TechCrunch, TMZ, TV Guide, Weather Underground, Wine Enthusiast Magazine, and Yoga Journal. You can also use Currents to subscribe to your favorite blogs and news feeds.
Currents is available for iOS and Android devices – smartphones and tablets. It’s completely free, as is all the content available within the app.
