Video Troubleshooting

If you are having difficulty playing the videos, here are tips for correcting the situation:

Checking Your Version of Windows Media Player

As noted above, the videos on this CD are playable in Windows Media Player, Version 8 or newer. At the time of publication, Windows Media Player 9 was the current version. It has been available as a free download since 2003 and works with Windows 98 SE, Me, 2000, XP, and Macintosh OSX.

You can check which version of Windows Media Player you have by opening the player and selecting from the top toolbar Help | About Windows Media Player (for computers running Windows), or Windows Media Player | About Windows Media Player (for computers running Macintosh OSX).

If you do not have at least Windows Media Player 8, we recommend you download the latest version of the player. You may wish to contact your organization's IT support group for assistance with the download.

Playing the Videos on Older Computers

Since video playback is typically the most demanding task that most computers have to perform, older computers with older components can sometimes have difficulties. Other than locating a newer computer, here are some tips for playing the videos:

1. Close out of all other open applications and toolbars on your computer, then try playing the video again. Since video playback uses a lot of RAM memory, having other applications open can prevent your computer from giving video playback the memory or other system resources it needs.

2. If you have room on your computer's hard drive, you can try copying the CD's files to your hard drive. Some older CD-ROM players may not be able to transfer the video to your computer quickly enough. Playback from the hard drive would remove this as a potential bottleneck to good performance.
