When you make edits to your image, you want to use adjustment layers to make sure your changes won’t affect the actual pixels. This is especially useful with masks, which you use to apply edits or effects to just certain parts of the image. Switching between white and black background and foreground colors allows the mask to show or hide the image underneath; when using masks, remember, black conceals, white reveals.

How to Work with Selections

One common way to work with Photoshop is to select and apply effects to specific areas or objects in images. There are several powerful tools to help with this; the Quick Selection tool works by detecting the edges of a selected area; Quick Mask mode helps you refine the selection; Refine Edge allows you to apply various effects to the edges of the selection. If you want to keep just the selected object, you can place it on its own layer and go from there, all without affecting the original image.

How to Work with Layers

This video shows how to put together a simple card that displays several images. You can use Photoshop’s shape and distribution tools to create and arrange squares on the card. Next, bring in your images, and using options in the Layers panel, clip each image and its appropriate square together. You can then easily adjust the images to fit into the squares, and link the two layers to keep them joined. Understanding the power of the Layers panel allows you to combine shapes and images for almost infinite potential uses.

Working with Smart Objects

Smart Objects help protect the information in an image file by adding a layer of security that prevents you from working directly on the image layer. Some edits, such as resizing an image, can have a negative effect on the pixels in a regular image layer, but will leave the image information in the Smart Object untouched. You can easily convert regular image layers into Smart Objects, or you can use the Place command to automatically add an image as a Smart Object. Camera Raw also allows you to open an image in Photoshop as a Smart Object.

How to Work with Type

Continuing to work with the card created previously, this video shows how to add type to your Photoshop project. Work with the Type tool to add text, change the size and font, and position it where you want it. Using the Character panel, you can adjust the vertical and horizontal spacing. You can also add some cool effects to make your card look more polished; place an image to show through the text, add some lines with the Line tool, and add drop shadows to large text and image boxes.

Portrait Retouching Basics

Photoshop’s retouching features can quickly improve any portrait. For the best results, remember to make effects subtle and natural looking, and to work nondestructively by using a separate layer for each type of edit. Use the Spot Healing Brush tool to remove small blemishes, use the Healing Brush tool for larger areas, such as circles under eyes. When you want to apply an effect to the entire image, you’ll work with a flattened version of the image that you’ve converted to a Smart Object, so you can take advantage of the Smart Filters; for example, when smoothing skin, you can use the Surface Blur filter, then use a mask to apply the effect to just the appropriate areas, and lower the opacity level to make the result look more natural.

How to Use Healing Tools

If you have a basically good image that needs a few corrections, you can use Photoshop’s healing features, newly improved in CS6. The Healing Brush tool will cover small flaws and blend them with the surrounding area. If you want to duplicate a selected area, use the Clone Stamp tool. To remove larger or more complex areas, choose the Patch tool set to Content Aware mode, select and drag the area to remove, and Photoshop will replace it with new content that fits in seamlessly. The Content Aware Move tool works in a similar way, but it moves the selected area to a new part of the image, and blends it in with the new surroundings.

How to Use Blur and Smart Filters

Part 1: Photoshop CS6 has some new blur filters that allow you to add cool visual effects in just a few steps. Tilt Shift Blur applies a controlled depth of field to an image, which is especially effective for a view shot from an elevated vantage point. Iris Blur focuses on a circular part of the image, so that areas outside circle are blurred; using the controls to rotate and resize the circle and adjust the level of blurring, this filter is a terrific way to highlight a specific area, like a face.

Part 2: The Smart Filters in Photoshop CS6 make it easy for you to make images more artistic, to take on the look of a sketch or painting. The Filter Gallery offers many filters, each with its own set of options, all of which display a preview of the effect as you apply it; you can combine multiple filters, with different results depending on how you order them. Working with your image as a Smart Object, you can edit the filters, and also apply a mask in order to paint in where you want the filter to take effect, and also choose blending options, and adjust opacity and mode.
