Preface
This book is your comprehensive guide to client-side JavaScriptª as implemented in Netscape( Navigatorª 3.x. It contains hundreds of complete script examples along with screen shots that illustrate the results of loading each script. The scripts are included on the CD-ROM.
Audience
This book is for Web authors who are interested in using client-side JavaScript language in their HTML pages.
JavaScript Version
This book describes both the Navigator 2.x and 3.x version of the JavaScript language, with emphasis on Navigator 3.x functionality. Features that are new with the Navigator 3.0 release are clearly marked with an icon in the margin. Although we make occasional references to JScript, Microsoft's implementation of the JavaScript language, none of the scripts in this book were tested on the Internet Explorer browser.
Because Netscape first implemented the JavaScript language in its Navigator 2.01 release, it's common to refer to the JavaScript version by Navigator release number. The JavaScript language does, however, have its own version numbering system, which is shown in Table P-1.

Jumping JavaScript CD Contents
The CD-ROM accompanying this book includes all of the JavaScript examples referred to in this book formatted for X11, Macintosh(, and Windowsª 95 platforms. To run files off the CD-ROM, mount the CD-ROM in the way specified by your platform and double-click on the index.html file at the top level. This index.html file is then loaded into your Web browser and provides links to the entire script hierarchy on the CD-ROM.
The CD-ROM was created by using Creative Digital Research's CDR Publisher( HyCDª, which integrates PC, Macintosh, and UNIX( formats onto a single CD-ROM. HyCD is compliant with all of the existing CD-ROM standards:
PC CD-ROM Format: ISO 9660
Macintosh CD-ROM Format: HFS
UNIX CD-ROM Format: ISO 9660 with Rock Ridge Extension
PC Windows 95 / NT 4.0 Format: Joliet File System

Note P If you are using a Macintosh computer, the first time you load the CD-ROM, you may be asked to rebuild the CD desktop. After that, you can simply double-click on any file with an .html extension to run it in the browser.
