But I Want to Use A Real Phone to Make Outgoing Calls!
At the beginning of this article I promised you that I'd teach you how to make calls using a standard phone rather than having to talk through your computer's microphone and speakers. Now I will deliver on that promise! To do this, you can use a product by Actiontec called the Internet Phone Wizard.
The Internet Phone Wizard is a small device that hooks up to your computer via a USB port, as you can see in the next image
After connecting the device to the computer for the first time, you will then need to install the drivers for the device. Doing this is pretty self-explanatory, so I won't go into that.
Now, connect your landline phone wire to the Internet Phone Wizard by plugging in the phone wire to the phone jack of the device as shown in the next image.
After you connect the phone to the Internet Phone Wizard, you are ready to begin making Skype-based VOIP outgoing calls. At this point, all you have to do is pick up your telephone receiver and then press the "#" key twice. The "Internet Call" light should be illuminated on the Internet Phone Wizard Device and you should also hear a dial tone.
Next, dial your desired telephone number using the formats shown next:
00 + Country Code + Area Code + Phone Number
So using the example from earlier, you would dial:
0015125555555
The country code for the U.S. and Canada is +1.
After a delay of a few seconds, you will be connected to your correspondent and can talk to him or her via your telephone receiver.
