Lab 6: Anti-Virus Software

Orientation

In this lab you will learn how to do the following:

  • Install a free anti-virus program.

  • Identify the benefits and characteristics of AV software.

  • Prepare for the Network+ subdomain 3.10.

Everyone needs to be protected from viruses, because there are millions of them out there. In fact, this is one of the big four when it comes to preventative maintenance for your computer. You really need to have a UPS, a firewall, software (and BIOS) updates, and rounding it out, anti-virus software. There are several to choose from. My personal choice is McAfee, but Norton is another big favorite. As long as you have one and, more importantly, as long as it is updated, that’s what is important. For the purposes of this lab you will use a free service from Trend Micro to see if you have any viruses.

Procedure

  1. Go to PC1.

  2. Access http://www.trendmicro.com.

  3. Click Products.

  4. In the next screen, where it says House Call, click Scan Now.

  5. In the next screen, click Scan Now, It’s Free!

  6. A pop-up window will ask you if you want to install and run Trend Micro. Click Yes.

  7. The scanner will install. When the install is complete, you can use the program on the Web page. Click the My Computer check box and notice that everything beneath it also becomes checked, as shown in Figure 3.49.

  8. Click the Scan button. The scan will begin.

  9. If the House Call program finds a virus, it will tell you. You can instruct the program to remove the virus from your computer. Alternatively, you can select Auto Clean so that the program will remove viruses automatically.

  11. When the scan is complete, remove any found viruses from your machine and close the House Call program.

Trend Micro also has a pay service, of course. If you find viruses on its Web-based House Call program, then that means your virus protection software is not up to date. As long as you get one and keep it up to date, you should be in good shape. The following websites will help you find updates for anti-virus software:
