What Type of Memory Do You Have?

Before going any further, you need to identify the type of memory that your system supports. There are several ways to do this. The first is to find your motherboard in Table 6.1, which categorizes systems by type of motherboard. You can find out what motherboard you have by referring to Appendix A. Just in case you can't identify your motherboard using this method, instructions are provided below for obtaining memory specifications from the HP site.

You should also obtain the product specifications for your computer from the HP Customer Care Web site, as described under "Getting Your Model Specs" in Chapter 4, "System Inspection." The product specification document for your model includes information about what type and how much memory comes standard in the computer and how much memory the computer can hold. Keep in mind that this applies only if you have the same motherboard that shipped from the factory.

The important thing is to identify the memory module form factor (SIMM, DIMM, DDR-DIMM, or RIMM) that your system uses. Once you find the form factor, then you just need to figure out how many slots you have available and how to populate those slots in order to get the amount of memory you want.

If you want to take the easy way out, go to the PNY or Crucial Web site. These memory vendors have a searchable database that will tell you what kind of memory your system needs. You can even buy the memory on the spot. Go to http://www.pny.com or http://www.crucial.com.

NOTE

Table 6.1 does not list SIMMs. If you have an early Pavilion model with the series numbers 50xx, 51xx, 52xx, 53xx, 70xx, 71xx, 72xx, 73xx, 74xx, or 81xx, your Pavilion uses 72-PIN SIMMs. Refer to "Buying and Installing SIMMs."
