Business in a Digital World

Before we go any further, let's take a look at the subtle difference between doing business in a digital world versus doing business in the more traditional world. Traditionally, technology has always been associated with some kind of invention or innovation that somehow made something difficult easier, and therefore better. For example, before the stirrup, armored knights could not go charging into other armed men because, with one hand on a shield and the other on a lance, they had no hands free with which to hold onto the horse. With the advent of the stirrup, warriors were able to stay in the saddle while leading a charge. Today's everyday technologies may not provide such a striking strategic advantage, but countless technologies have altered how we live.

Today we have a reached a technological point focused on networked information and digital computing. This digitizing and processing of huge amounts of information—digital technology—is changing the world.
