Using the Quick Briefing Home Screen

The Galaxy Tab S contains a specially designed Home screen called Quick Briefing, so you can get access to apps and features on the Tab S quickly. The row of Home screen icons at the bottom of the screen also has a unique icon for the Quick Briefing Home screen—instead of a bar, it’s a group of boxes.

View the Primary Quick Briefing Home Screen

The Quick Briefing Home screen contains two pages. The primary page contains a link to several apps preinstalled on your Tab S as well as quick links to items you use regularly such as bookmarks to websites.

  1. On the main Home screen, swipe from left to right to view the primary Quick Briefing Home screen.

  2. The Quick Briefing tile appears at the top of the screen and the day’s events appear in the upper-right corner of the tile. Tap an event to view more information about the event in the Calendar app.
  3. You can add up to three bookmarks in the bookmarks section; add a bookmark by tapping a plus tile.

  4. In the Bookmarks screen, tap the bookmark tile in the list.
  5. Tap Done.

  6. The bookmark icon appears in the icon tile, and the bookmark name appears underneath the tile.
  7. Tap SideSync to connect your Tab S with a Samsung Galaxy smartphone. You’ll learn more about using SideSync in Chapter 9, “Connecting to the Cloud.”
  8. Tap to add an alarm in the Alarm app. After you add the alarm, it appears in place of the “Tap here to add alarm” text.
  9. Tap to open the Yahoo! Finance app and add one or more stocks that you want to keep track of. After you add the stocks, they appear on the screen in the order that you added them. If you added more than two stocks, tap and hold your finger down in the stock list and swipe up and down in the list.
  10. Tap the refresh icon to update your current information (such as stock data) and display that updated information on the screen.

  11. Tap the Papergarden tile to set up the Papergarden app and read magazines on your Tab S.
  12. Tap the Here & Now tile to set up the Here & Now app and view interesting content (such as magazines and social media feeds) delivered to you, so you can read that content on the Tab S.
  13. Tap the Video tile to open the Video app and view the current video. The name of the video you’ll watch appears in the lower-left corner of the tile.

  14. Tap the Samsung WatchON tile to use your Tab S to control your TV and watch movies, web video, and TV shows on Tab S or your TV.
  15. Tap the Apps icon to open the Apps screen, so you can launch an app.

  16. Return to the main Home screen by pressing the Home button or by swiping from right to left on the screen.

View the Secondary Quick Briefing Home Screen

The secondary Quick Briefing Home screen is hidden but easy to access, and this page contains a calendar, link to files in the Hancom Office productivity app, and a list of your email messages.

  1. On the primary Quick Briefing Home screen, swipe from left to right to view the secondary Quick Briefing Home screen.
  2. The current monthly calendar appears in the green tile at the top of the screen. Your day’s events appear to the right of the monthly calendar. Tap an event to view it in the Calendar app.
  3. Add an event in the Calendar app by tapping the Add icon. You’ll learn more about using the Calendar app in Chapter 14, “Using Productivity Apps to Simplify Your Life.”

  4. Tap the Office tile to install Hancom Office onto your Tab S. After the Tab S installs Hancom Office, the Hancom Office Viewer appears, so you can view a thumbnail version of a document, spreadsheet, or presentation.
  5. Tap the Email tile, so you can set up your email account and view messages in your inbox within the Email tile. You’ll learn more about setting up and using the Email app in Chapter 8, “Sending Email and Instant Messages.”
  6. Tap the Apps icon to open the Apps screen, so you can launch an app.

  7. Return to the primary Quick Briefing Home screen by swiping from right to left on the screen.

Change Quick Briefing Settings and Bookmarks

You can customize what appears within the Quick Briefing tile as well as how often your stock information is updated.

  1. Open the Settings window by tapping the Settings icon.

  2. In the Quick Briefing section, tap a check box to the right of the setting you want to remove. After you tap the check box to clear it, you might see the feature (such as the bookmark tiles) disappear from the Quick Briefing tile.
  3. In the Bookmarks section, you can add a bookmark by tapping an Add Bookmark entry, and then adding a bookmark as you learned to do earlier in this chapter.
  4. Remove a bookmark by tapping the bookmark in the list. After you tap the bookmark, the tile disappears from the Quick Briefing tile.
  5. By default, stock prices don’t update automatically; you have to update the price yourself by tapping the Refresh icon in the Quick Briefing tile. You can update stock price information automatically by tapping Auto Refresh and then tapping the refresh time in the menu. You can refresh from as often as every hour to as long as every 24 hours.

  6. Return to the Quick Briefing Home screen by tapping the Back touch button.
