A Third Web Method

A third method requires building the GIF differently. Follow these steps:

  1. Load the mask selection.

  2. Copy the selected part of the image.

  3. Paste the selected part of the image (this process creates a new layer of only the selected portion of the image without a background).

  4. Delete the background layer.

  5. Delete the channel/mask.

  6. Switch to Indexed Color.

  7. Save it as a GIF file.

This image appears onscreen as having no background. The area with no image information shows the background as it is set in the Transparency Settings under Preferences. By default, this will be a gray-and-white checkerboard. The image performs on a Web page as if the checkerboard area of the image where empty.
