Middleware Technologies

In addition to web services, middleware for EAI and web-based systems is only part of the enterprise's full picture. Middleware for legacy systems, databases, e-commerce, and network systems fill out the picture with the following:

  • Distributed transaction and messaging systems

  • CORBA and other object-oriented technologies

  • .NET Framework, SOAP, and Microsoft Transaction Server

  • Enterprise Java Beans (EJB), Java 2 Platform Enterprise Edition (J2EE), Java Messaging Service (JMS), Java Media Framework (JMF), and other Java technologies

  • XML and associated technologies

  • Performance technologies such as IP traffic performance, bandwidth managers, traffic shapers, content-delivery networks, caching, load balancing, service management, and Microsoft Internet Security and Acceleration Server

The big picture, however, needs to be rounded out with the following for both inter-integration and intra-integration hubs:

  • Human resources

  • Business and workflow processes

  • Computer and network resources

  • Service management

  • Interoperability issues

  • End-user involvement in each developmental stage
