Final Thoughts

In short, an ad rating system—based on something like the W3C’s PICS system—is the antidote to the dilemma between excessive regulation and consumer protection from advertising malware. As the FTC considers bringing Do Not Track to Congress, I urge it to at least build a level of sophistication into the law, taking into account the latest ad content rating technologies to enhance web commerce, rather than stifling it.
