Sharing an Already-Defined Printer
To share a printer that is already defined on your computer, follow these steps:
- Open the Printers folder, located in My Computer, the Control Panel, or in the menu under Start , Settings , Printers.
- Find the icon for the printer in the Printers folder, right-click it to open the pop-up menu; then choose Sharing to open the <printername> Properties dialog box with the Sharing panel displayed. Or if the printer's own window is open, you may choose Printer, Sharing in the menu, which will also open the <printername> Properties dialog box. See Figure 16.7.
Figure 16.7 The <printername> Properties dialog box.
- Click Shared As. Accept the share name that Windows offers or enter your own share name in the Share Name field.
- Use the Additional Drivers button to choose the operating systems of all computers that will be printing to your shared printer. If you are not sure which to choose, consult with your System Administrator.
- You may also set special permissions for the printer, as described in "Setting Printer Permissions," as follows.
- Choose OK to close the <printername> Properties dialog box. In the Printers folder, the icon representing the newly shared printer will change to appear with a hand holding out the printer, as if offering it for the use of others.
