Mac OS X Unleashed

By John Ray and William C. Ray

Summary

The NetInfo database system is used by Mac OS X to store many of its system-critical settings. This database can be used to store and share administrative information across a network. Users can access NetInfo via the NetInfo Manager, or a handful of command-line utilities such as niutil, nidump, and niload.

In this chapter you learned the basics of the NetInfo system and how it is used to store user and printer information. It is extremely important to remember to back up your NetInfo database before making any changes. Without a properly functioning NetInfo system, Mac OS X will be rendered inoperable. Apple, to this point, has released very little information about the data that is and can be stored in NetInfo. It is a tool for hard-core administration and should not be considered a beginner's utility.
