PMP Exam Prep: Core Documents

Topics: Certification

So...you have resolved to study for the Project Management Professional (PMP) exam. Where should you begin your preparation?

Your first stop is your nearest online or "brick and mortar" bookseller to pick up the Project Management Institute's (PMI's) "bible":

A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge: (PMBOK® Guide), Third Edition

This is how Wikipedia describes the PMBOK Guide:

"The Project Management Institute (PMI) published the first A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge as a white paper in 1987 in an attempt to document and standardize generally accepted project management information and practices. The first edition was published in 1996 followed by the second edition in 2000. In 2004 the third edition was published including major changes from the first edition. Currently, an international panel of experts is working on developing the fourth edition which is expected to be published in late 2008.

The PMBOK Guide is an internationally recognized standard (IEEE Standard 1490-2003) that provides the fundamentals of project management as they apply to a wide range of projects, including construction, software, engineering, automotive, etc."

After you are in receipt of the PMBOK Guide, you need to download and print out a copy of the PMI Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct. In order to be certified as a PMP, you must agree to uphold the tenets that are outlined in this document.

Okay. Have you burned the proverbial midnight oil and read through the PMBOK Guide and the PMI Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct? Good. Now it's time to turn our attention to some hardcore exam preparation proper.

The truth of the matter is that in the IT certification space there are some "rock star" instructors. In IT security there is Shon Harris. In the A+ space there is Mike Meyers. And in the PMP space there is Rita Mulcahy.

Therefore, I would suggest that you pick up the following text immediately; like NOW:

PMP Exam Prep, Fifth Edition: Rita's Course in a Book for Passing the PMP Exam

That's enough for now. In my next post I will turn you on to some practice exam software. Peace out.
