There were things I liked about this book and things I disliked. On the like side, the author grouped the words in the book by hard skills, soft skills, and experience/credentials. This is a helpful way to categorize them when you're writing a resume, although there are clearly many words that could fit two or all three categories. On the dislike side, I found the words chosen less than useful. First of all, I would not recommend that anyone aiming at any position use words like lucubrate, elucbrate, or recrudesce. These are just too pretentious and would probably cause the resume to be tossed immediately. In addition, it was difficult to find some of the words I was looking for in the book. A word I use a lot is "contend," and it was not listed in the index at all. Yet when I dug deeper, I found it listed in two places under "assert." So if you happen to know what word it will be listed under, fine; if not, you're out of luck. Another word I use a lot is... Read more

I believe a resume is like a sales pitch and a positive, powerful resume can surely help impress the interviewer. This book has a very good collection of words with meaning and examples that I could see I can directly apply to my resume. Many times, I have the meaning in mind but cannot think of the right word to convey it. This book comes handy for that and saves a lot of time and effort.PROS - - Words are arranged in groups to convey specific qualities like - motivated, committed, creative, reliable, etc. - There area also industry specific terms at the end like - extrapolate, downscale, merge, etc. - I like that short examples are given to show how to use the word in a proper way. - Good thing about the Kindle version is that we can search for a particular meaning quickly. Of course everything always has a room for improvement, so it would be great if the author can add this feature - - Link each word in the main content to its place... Read more By

My title for this review states that this book is "Only for those without a background in writing." By this comment I do not mean those who work professionally as writers, I mean anyone who took an advanced English class in college. This book is also probably not for you if you already have a knowledge of technical terms for your industry. Many of the good word choices in here are "standard" enough that one would likely think of them alone while sprucing up a resume, while the more obscure terms (outside of examples of industry lingo) are so "out there" that you would likely be laughed at when your resume ended up at the top of the pile. I do give this book high marks for organization and think that it would be okay for those who are intimidated by writing despite having mad skills elsewhere...then this could be considered a resume refiner in the way that Toastmasters helps refine speaking ability. |
