Product Author Bios

RANDAL WILSON, MBA, PMP (Elk Grove, CA) serves as Adjunct Professor of Operations Management, Keller Graduate School of Management, Devry University. He is currently Operations Manager at Parker Hose and Fittings, and was previously Senior New Product Introduction Engineer at REMEC.

Operations managers: use project management (PM) tools and techniques to supercharge efficiency, free up resources, eliminate unnecessary meetings, and get more done faster! Long-time operations manager and PMP-certified project manager Randal Wilson shows how to apply PM to complete the crucial "smaller" tasks that can help your organization quickly achieve sizable performance improvements. Wilson guides you in utilizing PM-style processes, structure, communication techniques, and tools throughout operations, wherever they make sense and drive value. You'll learn how to plan, implement, and measure the success of high-impact changes, and organize key tasks so they actually get done. Wilson introduces specific PM-based techniques for eliminating waste in engineering, manufacturing, distribution, and inventory control, plus a full chapter of insights for improving virtually any supply chain. He shows how to use PM to improve the way you manage teams, schedules, budgets, and other resources, and helps you systematically predict, plan for, and mitigate operational risks. Using PM, you'll learn how to improve cooperation with other managers within operations, in other lines of business, and with senior executives. You'll discover better ways to "design in" efficiency right from the start, and learn how to choose and use tools that make you even more effective over time. The Operations Manager's Toolbox will be an invaluable resource for every current operations manager, everyone moving into operations, and every project manager seeking to apply their skills in new venues.

4.0 out of 5 stars Basic but Important Techniques Necessary for the Management World, March 16, 2013
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I really like this book as a reminder for what it means to be a really great manager. This book is not set up like a textbook but rather as a book you can sit down and read to improve yourself and the managers/employees working around and beneath you. I have taken an Operations Management class. Though the author doesn't go into the depth of the mathematical figures that a college level class might, he does a great job of assessing lots of different areas that managers are going to come into contact with. Overall, its a great book to learn some things and to look at your current management style to see what you can do to better understand the business and make some changes within yourself and the business.

****
Wilson provides a selective list of project management tools and techniques for a range of further management resources, and improvement. The book provides tools to implement, monitor, and control operations into effective systems. The author starts the analogy with major project management strategy, quality and control; for best business performance.

The book group enabling management tools, techniques and models into related means of developing both the manager and organization. Starting with communication, path and means he discusses meeting types, listing useful power tools. Next he gives guidelines to fix the process, by developing, modifying and staff training.

Waste management is an obvious issue in process organization, resources, and cost cutting. Managing and allocating resources, a basic common factor, is discussed with both human and facilities components, which proceeds logically to budget control, and risk management. Synergy is a novel... Read more

Randal Wilson's book "The Operations Manager Toolbox" is good basic 101 series primer on the steps to being a good operations manager or project manager. The areas he covers in the book are all to familiar for anyone who has ever managed a project large or small. For someone who is new to business this book is a good starting point. For those who are more experienced, this book is just a "been there done that" reading experience with not much new. It becomes mainly a refresher course here. Therefore, I would just recommend the book to those who are starting out in the business world.
