Lesson 2: Building Terrain in Unity, Downloadable Version

In this lesson we learn all about terrain in Unity 4. We learn to sculpt terrain with the terrain tools as well as a heightmap. We then texture our terrain and add trees, water, fog, and a skybox. We finish with learning to navigate terrain with controllers.

Lesson 3: Learning to Use Game Objects, Downloadable Version

In this lesson we learn all about game objects and the various game object types in Unity 4. We examine how to work with specific game objects like meshes, cameras, and lights. Along the way we learn about texturing, layering, and applying prefabs to our objects. By the end of this lesson you should have a strong understanding of the game objects you will use in your games.

Lesson 4: Detecting Collisions, Downloadable Version

In lesson 4 we begin diving into the powerful physics capabilities of the Unity game engine by exploring two basic forms of physics: gravity and collision. We work with rigidbodies and learn how to use them to generate physical effects.

Lesson 5

Lesson 5: Introduction to Unity Scripting, Downloadable Version

In this lesson we examine scripting in Unity 4. The lesson provides a brief overview of the concepts of scripting in C#. Some of the topics we cover are variables, operators, conditionals, loops, and functions. Once we have a firm understanding of the various scripting components, we begin adding interactivity to our game objects. We learn how to read user input, access game object components, and generate prefabs. We wrap up this lesson with a look at trigger colliders and graphical user interfaces.

Lesson 6

Lesson 6: Mobile Development with Unity 4, Downloadable Version

In this lesson we look at building our projects with mobile devices in mind. We briefly cover the ways to get up and running with both Android and iOS. We then install the Android SDK and get the Unity Remote application up and running. Once we are able to interface with Unity, we begin controlling our games with the built-in accelerometer available in most mobile devices. Finally, we look at how Unity handles multi-touch screen input and work to implement it in our project.

Lesson 7

Lesson 7: Building Our First Game, Downloadable Version

Lesson 7 pulls together what we have learned so far and guides us through making our own game. We build the game world, the player, powerups, spawning points, and the game control. Once those components are in place, we implement the HUD, or Heads Up Display, and the Main Menu and Game Over screens. We wrap up by learning how to build and run our game outside of the Unity editor.
