Ajay Gupta

Ajay Gupta is an authority on cybersecurity, IT strategy, and the implications for business risk and competitiveness. He applies keen analytical insight combined with ongoing research and extensive consulting experience to offer uncommon understanding of the strategic issues affecting the vital information organizations rely upon for their sustainability and prosperity.

A CISSP-certified Information Security Professional, he has 15 years of experience that includes senior IT security and research posts with Deloitte & Touche, Ernst & Young, Mitre, and Mitretek (now Noblis) prior to his founding of Gsecurity in 2002.

Ajay is the creator and host of Technology Today, a weekly program on the VoiceAmerica Talk Radio Network - the single largest producer of original Internet talk radio programming in the world, which airs every Thursday at 1:00 PM Pacific Time, 4:00 Pm Eastern and on demand.

Ajay is co-author of two best-selling books written for the university level and published by Addison Wesley: Hack I.T.,Security through Penetration Testing(2002), outlining the development of a penetration testing methodology and Defend I.T., Security by Example(2004), a compilation of IT, security, and privacy case studies.

Ajay has contributed chapters to two books: “Plugging Security Holes in Online Environments” for the Handbook of Research on Information Security and Assurance (2008), published by IGI Global and for which he also served as an editor, and “Managing Security Concerns” for Managing e-Business in the 21st Century (2003), published by Heidelberg Press. Among other writings are numerous articles, which have appeared in such publications as InformIT.com, Biz Monthly.com, and Everything Infosec, and he has also served on the editorial board for Information Science Reference.

His professional engagements include managing ERP implementations, performing disaster recovery and business continuity plans for higher education institutions, performing diagnostics and review for a client network that resulted in recommendations for developing an industry leading security posture, as well as working on a team that assisted the government of Hong Kong in defending against an intrusion into their technology infrastructure by one of the world’s most dangerous hackers at the time - a benchmark case in cybersecurity.

Ajay has held faculty appointments in the area of information security and data forensics at Golden Gate University, Champlain College, and Prince George’s Community College. He has been an invited lecturer and participated as a panelist at public and private organizations worldwide, including the Government of Hong Kong; ASIS International; EDUCAUSE; the International Economic Summit; the National Council for Higher Education Loan Providers; the Direct Marketing Association; the Cyberethics, Cybersafety, and Cybersecurity Conference; the Carey Business School at Johns Hopkins University; Loyola College; Ball State University; the Datatel Users Group; the CyberWatch Regional Consortium and the Maryland Higher Education IT Security Conference.

In addition to numerous memberships in professional and industry working groups, Ajay currently serves as the 2nd Vice President of the Maryland chapter of InfraGard as well as the Chair of its Cyber SIG unit, a public-private partnership with the FBI’s cyber crimes unit.  Past leadership posts include Co-Chair of the Green Markets Committee of the Chesapeake Regional Technology Council; Chair of the Information Security and Data Privacy Working Group of Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley’s Transition Team; Vice-Chair of the International Business Strategy Advisory Council; Reviewer for National Science Foundation grant applications; Board Member of the Prince George’s County Economic Development Corporation Technology Assistance Center (an incubator); Programs Chair for the Technology Council of Maryland’s Tech Network Steering Committee; and Vice President for Financial Affairs of the Maryland India Business Roundtable.

Ajay holds an M.B.A. from Georgetown University’s McDonough School of Business; and both an M.S. and B.S. (cum Laude) in Electrical Engineering from the University of Maryland, College Park. He is a member of Tau Beta Pi (the national engineering honor society), Beta Gamma Sigma (the international honor society in business management), and Phi Kappa Phi (the national honor society).
