Praise For MySQL

Reviews: MySQL

"The first New Riders book I purchased was MySQL by DuBois which I purchased about six hours after I purchased mSQL & MySQL by ORA. That ORA was one of the worst tech books I ever attempted to read. Myself along with quite a few other MySQL users have informed AbriaSoft that they should be packaging DuBois' book with their amazing product instead of the ORA book they currently use. ...I will be looking to New Riders in the future for my Linux, Networking and Programming (and Linux network programming) books because I have found the quality to be excellent. So Cheers to you folks and your excellent publications!

"Paul DuBois has gone beyond the technically comprehensive MySQL documentation to produce an informative and entertaining compendium of MySQL knowledge. Requiring little prior experience ("What is a database and why should I care?"), he explains general SQL and RDBMSs as well as the peculiarities of MySQL."

"I have read hundreds of technical books and have found few which compare with this excellent book. Paul answers your questions before you ask them, the layout of the material is great, and the complete topic is covered on three levels. I only hope Paul is receiving the acknowledgement he deserves and is thinking about his next book."

I am familiar with SQL but I am not a programmer. I have been dreading trying to find my way in this new world but your book is a dream come true, especially in this business! I could kiss Paul DuBois' feet for making everything so clear and understandable. He should leave that job at UW and devote his life to writing more of these great books. Being able to explain programming in such a logical and organized manner is a gift--far more rare than being able to program...I will start looking for New Riders books whenever I need more manuals.

"Your book is FANTASTIC! I am a partner in a small systems consulting firm. Recently we were tasked to develop a Web-based solution using MySQL and PHP on a Linux Box. I have experience with several languages, databases and operating systems but (of course) none of the above. Your book gave me the help I needed in a thoughtful, straightforward and humorous way. It's refreshing to find an author willing to communicate with his audience."

"My first thoughts on this book were that it is very well written; my impression after finishing the book (OK, I admit, I skimmed the Perl and PHP chapters since I do not program in these languages in general. I read enough to see how it was written and organized, but did not really spend time reading and understanding the source code.) was that it is very well organized. In fact, I wish Mr DuBois would write a book about SQL Server since I am pleased with the way that he organized the concepts in the book and explained the concepts."

"Not only is this book well organized and thorough, but the author's writing style is very clear, easy to follow, and devoid of "geekie cuteness" (which I REALLY hate!!!) If you want to learn about mySQL, this is (to date) hands down the best book."

"May I take this opportunity of complementing Paul DuBois on one of the best technical manuals I have had the pleasure of reading. I have 35 years experience in computing/software and I have seen many appalling examples of documentation (indeed, I still bear the scars from some of them). The MySQL book is a gem! Having recently started going the Perl route, I successfully implemented a substantial web-site MySQL database on a tight deadline for an important client despite never having used it before(or any other SQL variant, for that matter). Paul DuBois' book solved every problem with ease and clarity. What better endorsement can I give? I would also add that it is the only book of its type which I'm prepared to endorse to my colleagues and acquaintances."

"I checked this book out from the FRUUG library before knowing much about SQL or database design in general. I found this book to be extremely helpful, both as an introduction to SQL and database design, and to MySQL in particular. MySQL has much more information in it than I could digest in the time allotted by the FRUUG library, so I immediately went out and bought my own copy, and I refer to it frequently. I would recommend this book to anyone using MySQL, or even just contemplating a database project."
