DR. BASHKER D. BISWAS (Lincoln, CA) is a DeVry Visiting Professor of Business in the Keller Graduate School of Management, and Principal of the global HR consultancy Biswas and Associates. He has 40+ years of management consulting experience and has worked for companies including Control Data, Bechtel, Memorex, Maxtor, and Hitachi Data Systems; and consulted for Coopers and Lybrand and PricewaterhouseCoopers. He has been quoted in The Wall Street Journal and other leading publications, has conducted workshops and seminars worldwide, and earned a lifetime achievement award from WorldatWork (American Compensation Association).

In Compensation and Benefit Design, Bashker D. Biswas shows exactly how to bring financial rigor to crucial "people" decisions associated with compensation and benefit program development. This comprehensive book begins by introducing a valuable Human Resource Life Cycle Model for considering compensation and benefit programs. Biswas thoroughly addresses the acquisition component of compensation, as well as issues related to general compensation, equity compensation, and pension accounting. He assesses the full financial impact of executive compensation programs and employee benefit plans, and discusses the unique issues associated with international HR systems and programs. This book contains a full chapter on HR key indicator reporting, and concludes with detailed coverage of trends in human resource accounting, and the deepening linkages between financial and HR planning. Replete with both full and "mini" case examples throughout, this book will be valuable to a wide spectrum of HR and financial professionals, with titles including compensation and benefits analysts, managers, directors, and consultants; HR specialists, accounting specialists, financial analysts, total rewards directors, controller, finance director, benefits actuaries, executive compensation consultants, corporate regulators, and labor attorneys. It also contains chapter-ending exercises and problems for use by students in HR and finance programs.

As much as I love reading, I never thought a book about HR and Finance would be something I'd be giddy about, but I found myself going on about interesting and informative this book was at a party over the weekend and by Monday had several people calling me to remind them of the name of the book. This book is packed with incredibly useful information and most importantly will help both the HR and Finance departments to better evaluate and analyze the compensation and benefits for their employees. With so much emphasis on cost-cutting with what is usually a company's biggest expense - labor, but still needing to attract top talent, HR managers have a real dilemma. Understanding the language of business (accounting) as it pertains to human resource management, is one way to create that competitive advantage, and Mr. Biswas lays it all out in beautiful detail. There are so many implications to an organization in terms of their employee compensation and benefits (taxes, payroll,... Read more

I'm interested in all aspects of business, but I haven't read many HR-related works. This well-written book does a good job in introducing and exploring the world of employee compensation and benefits. I run a small business and thus handle HR-related chores myself. After reading "Compensation and Benefit Design," I'm better equipped to handle this area than I have been.

5.0 out of 5 stars Demystify the confusing world of finance and accounting as applied to human resources - an excellent MBA supplement book, April 30, 2013

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
I recently completed my MBA in organizational leadership and marketing. While some of my classes touched on many concepts in HR, it certainly was not my focus. Now in management, I am exposed to the myriad of issues within the organization that require understanding and attention. This book elucidates the numerous issues that affect HR decision at companies of all sizes, explaining them in clear and easy to understand language.

The book is truly a book of finance, not a book on leadership or dealing with people, but one of profit per employee, human resource planning, computing incentives for salaried, hourly, and commission based employees, and figuring out bonus plans such as stock award, stock options, and profit sharing.

The book also addresses issues related to international employee compensation.

Of particular interest to all companies today is the discussion of defined benefit versus defined contribution retirement plans, and the various... Read more
