Red Hat Linux 7 Unleashed

Red Hat Linux 7 Unleashed

By William Ball

Summary

In this chapter you learned a variety of ways to set up Internet connections using software included with your Red Hat Linux distribution. You found that there are numerous utilities and software packages you can use to establish connections over dial-up phone lines or over a network, even a simple network between two computers. PPP, PPPOE, and SLIP are mostly transparent to you once the interfaces are properly set up. The Linux user base (and most Internet users) will move toward broadband Internet access over the next several years. Even so, modem dialup for establishing remote connections will remain important. This is especially so when considering the growth of wireless Internet connections and current implementations of network access by cellular companies. You can be sure, however, that Linux will keep pace with any new change in technology, and that you'll find the tools you need to work efficiently with tomorrow's or next year's technology.
