In this chapter, you took the whirlwind tour of the ODBC 3 API. To recap:

• The ODBC API can be used to provide a standard interface to a wide variety of different data sources, ranging from simple text files to full-featured RDBMSs.
• Setting up ODBC requires the use of handles for the ODBC environment, data source connections, and SQL statements, as well as ODBC error reporting routines.
• Most connections to ODBC databases use SQLConnect().
• The easiest and fastest way to execute a single statement is with SQLExecuteDirect(), although a SQLPrepare() and SQLExecute() combination is optimal for repeating the same SQL statement again and again.
• Parameters can be sent to an application by using a ? placeholder.
• Data is retrieved from an ODBC database by binding program variables to the columns in a result set, both one row at a time and in groups of rows. Cursor behavior can be defined using ODBC functions.
• Database data can be manipulated using INSERT, UPDATE, or DELETE and an SQLExecuteDirect command, or by using positioned updates and deletes.
• Some databases support bulk operations. These operations can speed up large-scale data manipulation, such as inserting thousands of rows.
