Summary
This chapter took a brief look at the database interfaces used with Visual C++. This should give you an idea of which of the following chapters will be most useful for you in developing your particular applications. To recap:
- Visual C++ programmers usually use OLE DB and ODBC to access databases from inside a Visual C++ program.
- Although ADO is used in other languages to access OLE DB data sources, new applications written in Visual C++ 6 should concentrate on the pure OLE DB interface rather than the ADO interface.
- Most relational database packages use a variant of SQL (Structured Query Language) to manipulate data inside a database. SQL consists of the Data Definition Language (DDL), the Data Control Language (DCL), and the Data Manipulation Language (DML).
- You usually handle most DDL and DCL calls outside of your Visual C++ program. The new Database Project Wizard included with Visual Studio is a good way to administer databases.
- The DML consists of SELECT statements, which query a database, and INSERT, UPDATE, and DELETE statements that change data inside database tables.
