Sams Teach Yourself Microsoft Windows XP in 24 Hours

By Greg Perry

Workshop

The quiz and exercise questions are designed to test your knowledge of the material covered in this hour. The answers are in Appendix C, "Answers to Quizzes."

Quiz

  1. What are some of the items you can manage from the My Computer window?

  2. Why does Windows XP offer multiple views of the same window?

  3. How can you tell if a folder is shared?

  4. If you need to modify the way your mouse behaves, where would you go?

  5. True or false: You can start a program both from your Start menu as well as from your desktop?

Exercises

  1. Change your mouse button's orientation to swap the left and right mouse buttons. Close the Mouse dialog box and use the mouse for a while. You'll see that the buttons are reversed. Change the buttons back. You'll learn many ways to adjust your computer's behavior as you explore the rest of this 24-hour tutorial.

  2. Change the desktop theme from your computer's current theme to another. Open some windows and look at the Start menu and taskbar to see how the new theme affects the way your Windows XP looks. Additional themes are available on the Internet if you have access as you'll see from the Display Properties dialog box. Even if you find a theme you like, you probably should restore the default theme for the rest of this book's lessons so that your screens match the figures in this text. By the way, each account can specify a different theme. If you find one or two themes you like, you may even create additional accounts for those themes and log on under one of the accounts when you want to work inside one of the theme's environments.
