The Scanners and Cameras Window
The Control Panel has an option named Scanners and Cameras. You'll find the option inside the Printers and Other Hardware category if you have not switched to the Classic view of the Control Panel. If you've installed a scanner or a digital camera or both, an icon will appear that represents your scanner or digital camera hardware as Figure 22.1 shows.
The following To Do item explains how to capture images from your installed digital camera or scanner directly from the Scanners and Cameras window.
Figure 22.1 Control your digital picture devices from the Scanners and Cameras window.
To Do: Capturing Digital Pictures
- Open the Control Panel's Scanners and Cameras window.
- Click on the device, scanner, or camera from which you want to capture an image. A wizard begins that walks you through the capturing of an image.
- Click Next to continue following the wizard's instructions. Figure 22.2 shows a scanning preferences screen from which you control how you want to capture an image. You can request a color scan, a grayscale scan (colors appear as shades of gray), a black-and-white scan, or a customized scan where you specify individual color and capture settings.

- Click Next to specify the filename, disk location, and file format such as JPEG or BMP.
- If you want to put the picture on the Internet, either sent through e-mail or placed on a Web page, click the Yes option next to the question Also Copy These Pictures to the Internet? The wizard will format the picture best for Internet viewing and, on the next screen if you select this option, the wizard asks how to publish to the Internet and connects through the proper Internet service.
- Click Next and the wizard begins capturing the picture. The wizard saves the picture, unless you changed the location earlier in the wizard, to the My Documents\ My Pictures\ Picture folder location and displays the folder, with your image enlarged, as shown in Figure 22.3. In the figure, only one item currently exists in the My Documents\ My Pictures\ Picture folder.
Figure 22.3 You can now tell Windows XP what you want done with the digital image.
