Sams Teach Yourself Microsoft Windows XP in 24 Hours

By Greg Perry

Summary

This hour described two of Windows XP's disk utilities: Disk Defragmenter and Disk Cleanup. Both work to make your disk drives operate faster and with more disk space. If your disk drive begins to slow down, run Windows XP's Disk Defragmenter to eliminate the empty holes in your drive so that your disk access runs at top-notch performance. If you find yourself needing more free disk space than you currently have, run Disk Cleanup to see if you can remove some unwanted clutter.

Take it upon yourself to be responsible for your applications and data. Computers often work reliably for years but you're still a possible victim at any unexpected moment of a disk drive failure. A copy of your files means the difference between returning to your regular routine quickly or spending hours, days, and weeks trying to restore your system to its original state.
