The My Computer Menu

The menu bar on the My Computer window offers six choices: File, Edit, View, Favorites, Tools, and Help.

The File menu changes depending on what you may have selected. In the File menu are commands pertaining to file management, such as creating new folders, creating shortcuts, deleting and renaming files or folders, checking file and folder properties, and closing the window.

The Edit menu contains editing functions. Here, the Undo command will undo your last action. Use Cut to remove a file or folder and store it in the Windows Clipboard, Copy to make a duplicate of a file or folder and store it in the Clipboard, and Paste to put the contents of the Clipboard in the selected window. Use Copy to Folder or Move to Folder to move or copy a file or folder to another location. Choose Select All to select all of the files and folders in the window, and Invert Selection to select all the files and folders not selected while deselecting the currently selected files. Select All is helpful when you are deleting, copying, or moving several files at one time. To learn more about Cut, Copy, and Paste, see Lesson 9, "Managing Files with My Computer."

Under the View menu are a series of options for viewing toolbars and viewing files as different types of icons, thumbnails, and so forth as you learned in Lesson 2, "Working With a Window." Also, here you find the Go To menu which you can use to move forward or backward to the most recently viewed folders or to move up one level in the folder hierarchy. Using the Go To menu, you can also visit a home page (if you set a start page). The Go To menu also lists files and folders you have recently opened using My Computer, and places a check mark next to those currently open.

Favorites contains commands to add Web pages, folders, or files to your Favorites folder and lists the items already in the Favorites folder.

The Tools menu gives you access to Folder Options as we discussed previously in this lesson.

The Help menu offers a way to open the Help Topics window, as well as open the About Windows 2000 dialog box. About Windows 2000 tells you the version of Windows you're using, its copyright date, the name of the licensee, the amount of memory available to Windows 2000, and the percentage of system resources that are available. To learn how to use Windows Help effectively, see Lesson 4, "Using Windows 2000 Professional Help."
