Configuring Sound Options

A computer with a sound card and speakers can be a lot of fun, especially when you're playing games or if you like to listen to music CDs. There are also certain sounds associated with events on your computer, like beeping for an error message. That can be embarrassing in an open office.

To control the sounds made by your computer:

  1. Choose Settings, Control Panel from the Start menu.
  2. When the Control Panel appears, double-click the Sounds and Multimedia icon. The Properties dialog box appears (see Figure 14.5).

Figure 14.5 A list of sound events appears at the top of the Sounds and Multimedia Properties dialog box.

  3. From the Sound Events list, select the event for which you want to change the sound.
  4. Select a sound from the Name drop-down box. These sound files are stored in the Media subfolder of the Windows folder. If you have sounds in other locations, click Browse and select the sound file.
  5. To hear the selected sound, click the Play button next to the Preview. To stop the playback, click the Stop button.
  6. To change the sounds for a set of events, make a selection from the Schemes drop-down box (schemes are not automatically loaded during Windows 98 Setup, so you may have to load them from the installation disk). The sounds associated with the Events will change to reflect your selected scheme.
  7. Click OK .

To change the volume of the sounds emanating from your computer, double-click the speaker icon on the taskbar and drag the slider up or down the Volume bar. Check Mute to turn off the sound.
