Summary

Now that you've had a chance to work with audio in your Java programs, you have a better perspective of the ever-present talking computers in science fiction movies, TV shows, and novels.

Your Java programs can now do something my Commodore 64 was either unwilling or unable to do back in the early '80s: speak. Applets and applications can also play music, sound effects, and other noises.

Using audio files in an applet is a way to bring some attention to a World Wide Web page, because pages you can hear are still a rarity. However, when choosing your own files, it's important to use sound judgment: The LaughTrack applet is not likely to encourage repeat visits to a Web site.
