Mac OS X Unleashed

Mac OS X Unleashed

By John Ray and William C. Ray

Summary

This chapter detailed some of the general concepts and commands that can be used to interact with and control the behavior of other shell commands. File permissions, process management, and output redirection are all fundamental Unix concepts, although ones that many Unix users frequently choose to ignore.

Most anything that you can do with Unix, you can do without paying particularly close attention to this chapter, although the process might be many times as hard and take many times as long to accomplish. For this reason, we recommend that you familiarize yourself with these ideas and commands—they are fundamental to using Unix effectively, if not to simply using it.
