Seth FogieHow to activate your iPhone without paying anything... By Seth Fogie, Jul 3, 2007 12:33 PM

First, you do have to be an AT&T customer.
Second, you have to be able to get an iPhone.

Basically, I like the iPhone for what it is, but my Windows Mobile phone is much better - IMHO. So, after switching on June 29th 2007 from my WM device over to the iPhone as a result of an 'Upgrade' - I decided I wanted to switch back.

However, the iPhone is a neat device and I wanted to keep it around. In my case, this involves furture article ideas. Although, I could dump this on eBay and make a few hundred dollars. So, I stated that I wanted to keep the phone and get a new number on it. This was my plan - honest! I was then just going to cancel the plan, which would have cost me $175 (ouch).

However, AT&T never reset my iPhone. So, it was handed to be in an activated state - normally, new iPhones are locked until you purchase a plan via the iTunes sync.

In other words, there is a loophole through which you can obtain an activated iPhone that has no cell plan. So, what can you do with this?

Well, there is a Wi-Fi connection! And iTunes will still Sync up with it! In other words, I now have a iPDA :) Granted, I would still rather have a WM PDA, but this is the 'iPhone'!

Note, you have to do this within a limited time after purchase of iPhone (30 days I believe). And you might also want to take out your SIM chip. It is located on the top of the device. Just insert a paper clip into the hole and press firmly. The SIM sleeve should pop out.

It is a bit technical at this point, but the deed has been done and you can turn any iPhone into an iPDA! No subscription needed.
