1 p 5 As you probably know, there’s more than one kind of iPad. In fact, Apple releases a new version of the iPad every year. Each new version of the iPad is called a generation, as in the first-ever iPad was the first-generation model. Each generation of the iPad has hundreds of changes and improvements from the last model. Some of those changes—usually software changes—work on all iPads, but changes that depend on the iPad’s hardware—the electronics that make it work—usually only work on the latest model. Because of that, it’s important to know which iPad you have.
The two most recent models of the iPad are the iPad 2 (the second-generation model) and what’s called “the new iPad” (the third-generation model). The iPad 2 came out in 2011, and the new iPad was released in 2012.
Almost everything you read in this book applies to both the iPad 2 and the new iPad. There are two things that work only on the new iPad: 4G wireless networking (learn more in the “The Two Kinds of iPads” section of Chapter 4, “Surf’s Up: Using the Internet”) and Siri, the digital assistant (read more in “Meet Your Digital Sidekick: Siri” in Chapter 2, “Getting Started: Set Up and Sync Your iPad”).
As you probably know, there’s more than one kind of iPad. In fact, Apple releases a new version of the iPad at least once a year—sometimes more.
The two most recent models of the iPad are the iPad mini (which is the first-generation mini) and what’s called “the new iPad” or the iPad 4 (the fourth-generation model). Both the iPad mini and the iPad 4 came out in fall 2012. The previous iPad—the third generation—was released in spring 2012.
Almost everything you read in this book applies to the iPad mini, and the third- and fourth-generation iPads. A lot of it even applies to the iPad 2 (released in 2011). 1 p 26 There are three different models of iPad, and each offers a different amount of storage space. The smallest is 16GB, the largest 64GB, with a 32GB model in between. The more storage you have, the more music, movies, apps, and other content you can put on your iPad. If you want to put something on your iPad but don’t have enough space, you have to remove something else to make room. To remove things, sync your iPad, uncheck items, and then click Apply and you free up space. When you make these choices, keep in mind that not all items are created equal. A two-hour movie takes up more space than a five-minute song. A game with lots of nice graphics and voiced characters takes up more space than a book. Siri is unlike other features of your iPad in an important, and very cool, way: Instead of tapping on Siri, you speak to it. And Siri talks back!
Siri is a voice-activated tool only available on the third-generation iPad (not iPad 2 or the original iPad) that can help you do all sorts of things. To use it, make sure you’re connected to the Internet and then just hold down the Home button to activate Siri (a window pops up at the bottom of the screen) and speak to your iPad.

• An iPhone 4 or newer
• A fourth-generation iPod touch or newer
• A Mac with FaceTime installed
Unfortunately, your friends with other tablets, cell phones that aren’t iPhones, or Windows computers can’t use FaceTime.

Even if you delete a book you got at iBooks from your iPad, it’s not totally gone. You purchased that book and it remains associated with your account. Check out “Redownloading from iCloud” in Chapter 17, “Fixing Problems Yourself,” to learn how to get it back.

Ever found something in a book that you thought was so interesting or cool that you had to share it? Or how about something that you were just talking about with someone else? Using iBooks, you can share any text you select from an e-Book using email, Messages, or social media. To do that, follow these steps:
1. Tap and hold the text you want to highlight for two or three seconds, then let go.
2. A word or section is highlighted in blue. If you want to change the highlighted section, tap the blue dot at either end and drag it until the blue highlight covers everything you want.
3. Tap Share in the pop-up menu to reveal the choices for sharing the text.
4. To share by email, tap Mail. To text it, tap Messages. To share on social media (assuming your parents let you use it, that is), tap Twitter or Facebook. To copy the text so you can paste it into another app, tap Copy. The app you chose opens and the highlighted text is ready to be shared.

Define and Search
When you highlight text and the pop-up menu appears, you have two other options: Define and Search. If you want to learn the definition of a word, tap on it to highlight it, then tap Define. A dictionary definition of the word, examples of how it’s used, and its history, appears. This only works with single words; you can’t get a definition of more than one word at once.
Another option that appears in the pop-up after you’ve highlighted text is Search. Tap that and iBooks searches the book the highlighted text. This is the same as tapping the magnifying glass icon to search; it’s just another way to do the same thing.

Tapping someone’s FaceTime name or number isn’t the only way to start up a chat. Siri can also help you. To use Siri to call someone, hold down the Home button until Siri pops up and then say, “Call Mom,” or “FaceTime John Smith.” That person needs to have a FaceTime account, and you have to have it stored in your Contacts app. If that’s the case, FaceTime fires up, and you’ll be chatting in just a minute.
