A030302: Migrating from Other Mail Systems

Exchange Server 2003 provides several migration tools for migrating users from other mail systems (Lotus Notes, GroupWise, and so on) to the Exchange platform.

If you are familiar with the migration tools and methods provided by Exchange 2000, you'll see that not much has changed. Exchange 2003 provides an updated version of the following connectors:

Connectors in Exchange 2000 - The connectors for MSMail and Lotus cc:Mail that were provided in Exchange 2000 have not been updated for this version.

If your goal is short-term coexistence with another mail system, you can install and configure these connectors to provide communications between your Exchange topology and other mail servers.

One of the prerequisites for using these connectors is that you have correctly installed and configured Exchange 2003 within your organization. After you have established that your Exchange installation is up and running, you can install and configure the connectors.

Although the connectors were designed to be easy to set up and maintain, they require some updates and modifications to your existing mail servers or system.

For example, to use the GroupWise connector, you need to install some updates to your GroupWise server (if you haven't done so already). In addition, an administrator needs to perform some setup within GroupWise before you can configure the connector.

Although Microsoft provides these connectors and tools free of charge with Exchange 2003, many third-party providers have created migration applications and utilities that you can use to quickly migrate user settings and Mailboxes from a wide variety of mail servers and systems.

The advantage over using the coexistence method and the connectors provided with Exchange 2003 is that you can switch directly to Exchange 2003 without having to try to work out communication and synchronization between the two mail systems.

Following is a list of these third-party providers:
