Before you upgrade from an Exchange 5.5 site, ask yourself the following questions:
Does your organization currently use Active Directory? If not, consider planning and implementing it.
Are your Exchange 5.5 server backups current and error-free?
Have you selected an upgrade method? Will you be running Exchange 5.5 and 2003 side by side? Are you familiar with how the Active Directory connector works?
Will you be upgrading to Outlook 2003? Have you read through the Outlook deployment guide? Do you have an upgrade strategy in place for the client software?
Do you have a deployment plan for the upgrade? Does the plan have contingencies for failure?
Is the target Exchange 2003 server part of a network with Domain Name System (DNS) and Windows Internet Naming Service (WINS) installed and configured?
Do your domain controller, catalog servers, and Active Directory run on Windows 2000 Server SP3 or Windows Server 2003?
Do you have a server that has at least an Intel Pentium 133MHz or greater processor, with 256MB of RAM, 500MB of disk space, and 200MB available on the system drive?
Are the drives in the server formatted using the NT File System (NTFS), as opposed to the file allocation table (FAT) file system?
Is the server operating system either Windows 2000 Server SP3+ or Windows Server 2003?
Have the following components been installed and configured?
Internet Information Services (IIS)
World Wide Web Publishing Service
Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) service
Network News Transfer Protocol (NNTP) service
NET Framework
ASP.NET
When you are sure that you have met all these requirements, you can start to plan and implement your upgrade from Exchange 5.5 to Exchange 2003.
