Through my blog and an interview with the Indianapolis Star newspaper, I’ve become “slightly famous” on the topic of Social Networking for Job Hunters. Last week I was invited to give a 90 minute presentation to a Job Club at Oi Partners. Twenty such job hunters attended, all hoping to learn how to use the social networking site LinkedIn (www.linkedin.com) to help them find jobs.
If you’ve been reading my blogs for some time you know that I talk a lot about the importance of networking during the job search. You are out there, meeting new people, to learn about the unadvertised jobs, so that you can interview against considerably less competition.
I’m unemployed myself, but have built a reputation around town as someone that knows about social networks, and has used them effectively to extend my search to find many leads that I might not have been able to come across on my own.
I had the pleasure of being invited by Oi Partners in Indianapolis to address their Job Club on this particular occasion. In preparing I took the blogs that I’ve written here and created an outline around which I designed a PowerPoint slideshow for my presentation. It was very informal and interactive. I covered the slides but also gave a live demonstration of Beginner and Advanced topics that you can use in LinkedIn to extend you network for job searching. The attendees were very appreciative of the information that I shared with them and asked lots of good questions. I was happy to answer them.
Each of them wanted a copy of my slides when I was done. Post a comment below, as well as email me at email@example.com and I’ll send you my presentation just for being a Laid Off IT Guy! blog reader.
