Storage Providers and SQL Server

When I worked with Oracle systems, I found that the storage system was always considered separately from the database engine. This made sense, because some Oracle systems ran on mainframe-like operating systems.

Since SQL Server runs on Windows, the DBA is often expected to know about drives. That works fine when you're local, but what about when the drives are on a SAN or you're not in charge of the storage?

I think as time goes on more and more DBA's will work in this environment. Make sure you bone up on the storage subsystems with books like this one.
