Most tasks in SQL Server can be handled with a single tool. But there's at least one task that takes multiple tools - Performance Tuning.
For performance tuning, you have to use more than Enterprise Manager or Query Analyzer for SQL Server 2000, or SQL Server Management Studio for SQL Server 2005. But you also need the log viewer, Performance Manager from Windows, and possibly even the SQL Server Profiler.
Should there be a single tool for this kind of task? Or will we always need to use lots of tools to get at the root causes of something complex like this? Sure, there are commercial tools that do more, but even those don't do everything.
I think we'll always need multiple tools. I have a toolbox full of tools for my home, and one thing doesn't do it all.
