CNET's Elsa Wenzel offers a thoughtful commentary on the new web based applications and whether they pose a threat to shrink wrapped software.
This is a provocative issue and one I intend to revisit in a future update. One user mentioned prefers online apps because they don't require him to synch or back up documents.
This is all well and good if you can count on 1) a reliable web connection anywhere and everywhere and 2) that the host of the documents will not lose them. If I trust any company to preserve my data it would probably be Google, but I am a control freak and still prefer to have my applications and files completely under my own control, for better or worse.
Having said that I am intrigued by some apps like Adobe's online Premiere which I intend to try, although particularly for video I really wonder whether the bandwidth is there to do the things I want to do.
We'll see - comments are appreciated.
